Every Second is a Highlight Being a person who’s had to shift from one place to another and experience heart-breaking culture shock, it’s needless to say that I’ve been very skeptical of living in the Philippines. I remember when I was still in High School in PNG (a couple months before flying to PI), I would always tell myself that I’d actually hate living here. The main reason for this was because I would be thousands of kilometres away from all my friends whom I’ve come to love as family. And I’m not gonna lie, the bumper-to-bumper traffic and vigilant bus drivers of EDSA don’t exactly make Manila a place to love lol. But living in the Philippines (permanently) for over 2 years now has helped me realize why I loved living in PNG so much aside from its simple life - it’s because of the awesome people I’ve met, and the amazing friends that I’ve made. Living here, the university life, the organizations joined - all these have introduced me to some of the most amazing people that I’ve come to know and grow very close to. I always wanted the university life to move at a rapid fast forward rate, to get everything over with as soon as possible. But as I meet new people, get to really know them, and treat them like family, I can’t help but wish I could take back everything bad I said about living a “new life” and more so hope that time moved a lot more slowly so I could spend more time with these people, before inevitably partaking ways. Every second is a highlight. Everything that you do with the ones you’re close to can only be experienced once, and every second you spend with them will only pass by, once. Though good or bad, I always need to remember that these experiences will soon become memories, and maybe even something that will leave my mind permanently. Cherish the moments you spend with the friends you’ve come to love while the time is on your side, and always remember to highlight these experiences and keep them close.
